Benjamin's Astrological Biography Benjamin Bernstein's passion for astrology awoke when transiting Uranus, ruler of astrology, approached conjunction to his natal Mercury in 2004. Inspired by two astrology consultations he received from Kelly Lee Phipps, Benjamin became Kelly's mentee and, about a year later, graduated from Kelly's Professional Astrologer Certification Program in Asheville, North Carolina. (Kelly commented that Benjamin had, in one year, mastered material that most students would have taken four years to learn.) Benjamin has also successfully completed the professional courses in Ethics and Counseling Skills administered by ISAR (International Society for Astrological Research). Drawing on marketing skills honed in the mainstream business world and as a professional singer/songwriter, Benjamin built up a full-time astrology practice five months after hanging out his shingle in 2005. By December 2007, he had worked with approximately 1500 clients. In October 2005, Benjamin accepted Kelly's invitation to join him as co-host of the weekly Cosmic Weather audio podcast, targeted at serious students wishing to deepen their astrological wisdom. The two-hour shows featured three segments: the Celestial Forecast (the next seven days’ transits), Astrology Illustrated (discussion of an astrology topic or interpretations of listeners’ charts), and the Supernova Star of the Week (interpretation of a famous person's natal chart and moving planets during key life events). Benjamin stayed with the podcast, which served as a sort of public apprenticeship, for 65 episodes before resigning at the end of 2006. (Past shows are archived for free listening.) In March 2007, he started his own audio podcast, This Week in Astrology (www.ThisWeekInAstrology.com), which he now co-hosts with his wife and fellow astrologer Spiritsong. The show focuses on how to make the best use of the current planetary energies, and has been the #1 astrology podcast on iTunes since late 2007. In 2006, Benjamin was the organizing founder of the Asheville Friends of Astrology, which brought together Asheville's astrological community for the first time. The monthly meetings usually feature visiting guest speakers and typically draw 25 to 30 people, most of whom are practicing professional astrologers. Benjamin wrote astrology columns for several Asheville-based publications, including The Indie, Rapid River Arts Magazine and Natural Awakenings. He is now an astrology columnist for Aquarius News, the largest and longest-running metaphysical and holistic publication in the Southeast United States. His monthly astrology column also appears on AspireNow.com. Benjamin began achieving greater national recognition in 2007. That spring, he spoke on marketing for astrologers at two national astrology conferences: the annual NCGR (National Council for Geocosmic Research) conference in Baltimore, and The Blast Astrology Conference in Sedona, Arizona. He will be a "free speech" presenter at UAC (United Astrology Conference), which is expected to be the world's largest astrology conference, in May 2008, on the topic, "Light Speed Astrology: Diving into the Heart of the Chart."
